Buzzcity recently caught up to artist Josh Goff as he was working on a commissioned mural on the alley side of the Avord Towers in downtown Regina. This one is a street scene. It is rendered in a more conventional style than the expressive nature of his other work and indicates the breadth of his skill. (There are numerous Goff works around town. See the Buzzcity archives for December 2010)
That he is engaged on yet another ‘commercial’ commission may draw criticism from graffiti purists, but it confirms Goff’s belief that working with and for the community is a better way to win public approval than by tagging trash cans and garage doors. This alleyway, which connects from Scarth St. to Hamilton St., now features a number of works by local artists on several of the buildings. Some, like Goff’s current work, tend toward mainstream tastes, while others are message-driven and more challenging to view – the kind of mix, and quality, you’ll find in an art gallery, except that these pieces are as visible as billboards, far more pleasing than the average advertisement and bound to draw a whole lot more attention.
